The Altamont Fair Has
Embarked On a 5 Year Capital Campaign to Raise
$1 Million to Continue Preserving the Agricultural
History of Albany, Schenectady & Greene
Counties
Spearheading a Community Effort to Preserve
Our Agricultural History.
The Altamont Fair is home to one of the State's
finest collections of antique farm machinery.
With the disappearance of the agricultural
way of life, it becomes increasingly more
important to ensure that this piece of American
History is preserved for future generations.
The Albany, Schenectady and Greene County
regions were the gateway through which America
was able to expand west in the early 1800’s.
Much of the agricultural technology that was
invented in our region is still in use today.
The volunteers who have run and operated the
Altamont Fair for generations have undertaken
a most important mission to preserve the history
of our region through its collection of antique
farm machinery and recreation of Historic
Altamont circa 1890. The Albany, Schenectady
& Greene County Agricultural and Historical
Societies, Inc is a not-for-profit 501 (c)
(3) corporation dba Altamont Fair, with the
objective of promoting “agriculture,
horticulture, domestic and mechanical arts,
historical displays and allied sciences through
educational instruction, displays and competition.”
However, with the passage of time, the facilities
on the fair grounds have fallen into disrepair.
Until now the main source of revenue for the
Altamont Fair has been the money raised during
fair week. Being a completely volunteer driven
organization, all the revenue from fair week
goes to cover expenses and maintain the facilities.
With the weather dependent nature of an outdoor
festival, the annual revenue projections are
subject to change.
For this reason, the Board of Directors of
the Altamont Fair has had the foresight to
change the way it has done business in the
past. Last year they invested money into capital
improvements throughout the fair grounds.
The Altamont Fair built the 60 x 150 sq ft
Commercial building, which opens up enormous
opportunities for shows, company picnics and
corporate events. In addition to a reallocation
of its assets, the Fair has pursued sources
of external funding for the purpose of restoring
the grounds to its historical beauty. We have
recently been awarded a grant to restore the
Fine Arts Building which is placed on the
State and National Registers of Historic Places.
In 2004, the fair sold a plot of land. With
the money raised from the sale, they intend
to build a new 80' x 200' multi-use building
and a new bathroom facility
Even though the last couple years have produced
positive results toward the preservation of
this important piece of our history, there
is still much that needs to be done. The management
committee has developed a five year capital
campaign designed to raise $1 Million for
continued restoration over the next five years.
